How it works

This calculator applies the National Credit Act fee caps: 5%/month simple interest for short-term credit (≤R8,000, ≤6 months), or amortised annual interest (capped at repo + 21%) for personal loans — plus the capped initiation fee, R69/month service fee and, on personal loans, credit life insurance at R4.50 per R1,000 outstanding.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is loan interest calculated in South Africa?
It depends on the credit type. Short-term credit (≤R8,000, ≤6 months) uses simple interest capped at 5% per month. Unsecured personal loans are amortised at an annual rate capped at the repo rate + 21% — each instalment pays interest on the remaining balance plus a slice of capital.
What fees are included in this calculator?
All the fees the NCA allows: the once-off initiation fee (R165 + 10% of the amount above R1,000, capped), the monthly service fee (max R69 incl VAT), and — for personal loans — credit life insurance capped at R4.50 per R1,000 of the outstanding balance per month.
Why is my lender's quote slightly different?
Lenders may charge below the caps, price credit life differently, or offer you a personalised interest rate based on your credit profile. Our calculator shows a realistic maximum-cost estimate — your pre-agreement statement from the lender will show exact figures before you sign, as required by law.
Can I pay my loan off early?
Yes. Under the NCA you may settle small and intermediate credit agreements early without penalty — you only pay interest and fees up to the settlement date. Paying extra each month directly shortens your term and cuts total interest.
